Family says teen was lured to her death by boys she thought were friends

Sylvia McGhee, 14, murdered in Canton, Ohio (Image source: GoFundMe/ Sylvia McGhee lost her life In cold blood)

by MO BARNES

By all accounts, Sylvia McGhee, 14, was a bright and outgoing middle school student who had a full life ahead of her. Now her family is grieving and wondering why Sylvia snuck out of the house in the early morning hours of March 30, 2019, only to be found dead a short distance away from her home in Canton, Ohio.
According to Canton police, Sylvia’s body was found just a few blocks away from her home around 4 a.m. with a gunshot wound to the back of her head. She was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:01 a.m., according to the Stark County Coroner. Police have poured over Sylvia’s cellphone and social media postings and have identified two suspects. The suspects are reportedly 13 and 14 years old and were allegedly her friends.
The 13-year-old has been charged with obstruction of official business and is in custody. According to Canton Police Captain Dave Davis, “He lied to officers. He gave false information during his interview.”
The second suspect has not been arrested or charged at this time. Davis stated to ABC News-5, that all information regarding the murder has been turned over to the Stark County Prosecutor’s office. It will be up to a juvenile justice prosecutor to decide what charges may be filed.
Sylvia’s grandmother, Sylvia Milina, believes her granddaughter was lured to her death. “She didn’t even have a chance. … It was like it was a set up to me because she’s never been out at that time,” she said to the media.
This sentiment was echoed by the teen’s mother, Ashley Milina who has created a GoFundMe campaign titled “Sylvia McGhee lost her life in cold blood” to help with funeral expenses. She wrote, “My poor baby was murdered in cold blood. Her life was taken senselessly and carelessly. She was set up by people she considered her friends. She was only 14 years old. She was lured out of her home by some of her friends into the alley behind her house, and murdered, right behind her own home. That person who murdered her stole a part of me and my family, my heart, my soul, my world, that I will never get back nor can it be replaced. #JusticeForSylviaMcGhee.”

Woman charged with selling 2-year-old for sex leads police to child molestation suspect

Houston - His name is Michael Lowry and when we rang, he answered the door to his Southeast Houston home. He confirmed who he was. “Are you Michael Lowry?” I asked. “Yeah,” was his reluctant reply.

According to court documents this started last year with an investigation by the Montgomery county DA's Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. They intercepted a woman named Sarah Peters who was heading to Conroe "who agreed to allow an adult male to engage in sexual intercourse with her two year old daughter in exchange for $1,200."

When Peters and her daughter arrived to meet Lowry, she was taken into custody, and Child Protective Services took custody of her daughter.

That then led investigators to Lowry. She told them she allowed Lowry to gratify himself while touching her daughter. She showed them messages sent via the social media site "Kik." They discussed getting more naked pictures of the girl. He allegedly wrote to her, "The only reason I need to stop seeing you is I want you both," and "I remember you talking about Benadryl, and I imagine the things we could do with her sleeping."

Peters admitted to exchanging child pornography with Lowry on several occasions. Numerous images were located on his phone containing items of "child pornography" and "child erotica".

Detectives went to Lowry's home. His wife showed them his cell phone, laptop, and thumb drive  allegedly containing child pornography. She stated that she and her husband have an open marriage, and that she was aware of the sexual relationship between Lowry and Peters. Upon finding out that the two had spent the night at a hotel with Peters' daughter present, Lowry's wife requested that the relationship end.

Lowry allegedly denied having any sexual contact with the girl, but the "defendant further admitted to talking to Peters about having children together and raising the children in an incestuous family."

He had not yet been arrested, but was already choosing to be silent.

"We'd like to talk to you about the charges against you. Did you really try to have sex with a two year old girl?" I asked. He smirked and shut the door. Hours later he was in custody. He had been living just three blocks from a school.

Pennsylvania police chief, friend charged with raping child over 7 year period

A small Pennsylvania town police chief and his friend were charged with raping a child over a seven-year period when they were teenagers starting when the girl was 4 years old, state prosecutors said Wednesday.

Brent Getz, 27, was arrested and charged Tuesday along with Gregory Wagner, 28. The alleged victim said both men sexually assaulted her, often at the same time, from 2005 to 2012.

The investigation began in 2012 when the child, who was 12 at the time, reported Wagner had been assaulting her, prosecutors said. No charges were filed following an investigation.

Three years later, a criminal complaint was prepared charging Wagner, but it was dismissed due to a paperwork error. Charges were never refiled.

In August, a police officer revisited the case. It was then the victim said Getz also sexually abused her. Getz became chief of police earlier this year in Weissport, a town of 412 people in Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley, about 75 miles northwest of Philadelphia.

It is unknown whether council members who appointed Getz knew of the allegations. A message was left with a phone number found for Paulette Watson, the mayor of Weissport.

Wagner admitted he and Getz sexually abused the girl together, prosecutors said. Attorney information for either man could not be found in court documents. Both men remain jailed. Messages could not be left with phone numbers found for Getz and Wagner.

The victim said she was sexually assaulted hundreds of times between the ages of 4 and 11, both by Wagner and Getz. She said Wagner made her watch pornography with him. The attorney general's office did not disclose how the men knew the child.

Authorities found many electronic devices at Wagner's home, including his cellphone, which had Google searches of terms related to child pornography, prosecutors said.

Both Getz and Wagner were arraigned on charges. The men are scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing April 3.

Judge again delays sentencing for former CHP sergeant found guilty of child porn charges

By Richard Bammer

For the third time in as many scheduled hearings, a Solano County Superior Court judge, saying he wanted a second, “supplemental” psychologist’s report, delayed sentencing for a former California Highway Patrol officer found guilty in late October of downloading and possessing kiddie porn in 2014 while on and off duty.

Daniel Healy ordered Eric Curtis Lund, 54, who was scheduled to be sentenced Wednesday in Department 2, instead will return at 8:30 a.m. May 1, to the same department, in the Justice Building in Vallejo.

The judge said he wanted Kathleen O’Meara, a forensic psychologist who interviewed Lund before the hearing, to submit a follow-up report before the May court appearance, adding, “There’s value in making amends to the family,” an apparent reference to Lund’s wife and three children.

Deputy District Attorney Ilana Shapiro, who prosecuted the original case and the retrial, was clearly frustrated after the hearing, saying the postponement was “a waste of time and resources” and questioned if Lund will ever admit that he possessed and downloaded child pornography while on duty during the summer and early fall months of 2014.

During the morning’s proceedings, Lund’s attorney, Colin Cooper of Berkeley — with Lund, bearded and haggard-looking in a striped jail jumpsuit, at his side — asked the judge to “recognize a human being in all of his or her imperfections.”

Cooper said he believed that “people can redeem themselves,” noting that Lund’s life has been wrecked by the guilty verdict, requiring him to register as a sex offender for life and the losing of his licenses to practice law and real estate.

The attorney also noted that his client faithfully came to court on time when required during the past four years and, while in prison, if not granted probation, will be in solitary confinement because he’s a former CHP officer and also in protective custody because he’s considered a child molester.

Toward the end of his remarks, Cooper told Healy that his client “will make it no matter what you do.”

Lund then read a prepared statement, and a woman who appeared to be his wife began to weep softly while seated in the public gallery.

Afterward, Healy, who conveyed the impression several times that he was about to impose a sentence, said he “was not a fan of a prison sentence,” calling it a “blunt instrument.”

“I do believe in redemption,” he said, but then added, looking at Lund, that the former CHP officer was “in denial” about the crime for which he was convicted.

Whatever Healy’s eventual sentence may be — Lund faces as much as five years in state prison — it will be the result of “the decision you made,” not the jury’s verdict, the judge said.

“In the final analysis, you were looking at child pornography,” said Healy, who repeated that he believed Lund was “in denial — that’s not going to work.”

“I do not understand what it takes to watch these images,” the judge said, referring to the sexually explicit video clips shown during the trial, calling them “soul-crushing.”

In something of a condemnation of nearly two dozen people who wrote letters in support of Lund, the judge said they “all share in the denial … His support doesn’t help the path forward.”

Healy said Lund’s actions feel “like a bigger betrayal” because he was in law enforcement, then cited five “aggravating factors.” They included “abusive” and “sadistic” images; the sheer number of them, in the thousands; their redistribution online; his violation of the community’s trust; and the “lack of candor” during his testimony.

“The aggravating factors outweigh the mitigating factors,” said the judge, who did not signal what Lund’s eventual sentence would be, pending the supplemental psychologist’s report.

“The prison solution and the probation solution is a farce,” said Healy.

Lund, a retired 26-year veteran of the CHP, worked out of the agency’s Fairfield office when he was arrested on Oct. 16, 2014, and later posted bail.

Longtime Vacaville Police Detective Jeff Datzman, a digital crimes expert, was a key witness in the case.

The jury found Lund guilty of possessing and controlling child pornography depicting children under 18 years of age, more than 600 images’ worth, and knew it depicted children under 18; and secondly, possession and control of child pornography, commonly called “kiddie porn.”

Shapiro, in an hourlong closing argument during the second trial, said Lund’s victims were “thousands of children” and the “residents of Solano County” while he was on duty and was “supposed to be protecting us.”

Datzman’s investigation centered around a search for a person who was going online and downloading child pornography images and videos, some 14,000 of them as it turned out, while at various locations with WiFi capability throughout Solano County. It was evidence collected from Lund’s personal vehicle, where investigators found a laptop, several flash drives and other electronic equipment.

The detective’s forensics indicated Lund was connected at various times during his graveyard shifts to WiFi-enabled locations, from the Yogurt Beach Shack in Vacaville to a Cordelia Park neighborhood, from June 13 to Oct. 16, 2014. While at the CHP office in Fairfield, investigators also found evidence from Lund’s work desk and his work locker.

10-year-old boy dies by suicide after bullies tell him ‘kill yourself’

The following news article is an example of an epidemic that's happening all the time. Children (and adults) are losing their lives after being bullied repeatedly.

This is not an isolated incident. This is a problem unresolved that belongs to society, that belongs to everyone - parents, guardians, teachers, doctors, mental health professionals, law enforcement agencies and the judicial system.

The only way to draw the necessary awareness needed to problem-solve these tragedies is though more serious consequences for the bullies themselves and if the bullies are minors, their parents and / or guardians need to suffer consequences as well.

Society, as a whole, needs to tackle this issue and immediately, so that more children (and adults) don't lose their lives at the hands of bullies.

News article By Jackie Salo

A 10-year-old Texas boy killed himself after he was relentlessly tormented at school by his classmates — who even told the child to “kill yourself,” his grieving mother said.

The family of fifth-grader Kevin Reese Jr. — who hanged himself in a closet of his Houston-area home on Jan. 21 — is now urging schools to address bullying, news station KTRK reported.

His mom, Crystal Smith, said Kevin was a “goofy child,” but often struggled with being picked on at Robinson Elementary School.

“They wrote on his tablet to ‘Kill yourself, you don’t belong here,'” Smith said. “When it got physical back in November, he came home crying because he didn’t fight back and one of the boys punched him several times coming from recess.”

She reported the incident to school officials, who told her there was no evidence of a “physical fight,” the local ABC affiliate reported.

“They told me they never found any bullying going on,” Smith said.

The taunting at school reportedly continued, the mom said. Then, two months later, the young boy took his own life while his mom was out of town for work.

“He just had enough,” Smith told the station. “He just had enough and he felt that he was backed into a corner.”

Smith said she’s speaking out to raise awareness about preventing child suicide.
“Pay attention to your child, don’t assume that things are handled at the school, stay on top of it until you see something come out on the end,” Smith said.

If you or someone you know is feeling suicidal, you can get help by contacting the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255

Missing Girl, 15, Found Dead in Industrial Area of Compton Had ‘Traumatic’ Injury

BY TRACY BLOOM AND CHRISTINA PASCUCCI

A death investigation is underway after the body of a missing 15-year-old girl was found with a "traumatic" injury in an industrial part of Compton on Monday, authorities said.

Homicide detectives responded to the 500 block of West Victoria Street after the discovery of a body was made shortly before 1:30 a.m., according to a news release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The victim was identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner as Samantha Bustos-Vital. The girl's family contacted KTLA saying she had been missing since Friday after hanging out with friends.

According to sheriff's officials, the teen resided in an unincorporated area of Gardena and was officially reported missing by family members on Sunday.

She was found Monday after suffering a "traumatic" injury to her upper torso, the sheriff's release stated.

The area where her body was discovered is near the fenced-off Dominguez Hills Industrial Park, a portion of which was cordoned off with yellow crime scene tape throughout the morning, video from the scene showed.

National Retail System is located on the property and personnel are cooperating with the investigation, according to Andy Miller, the company's executive vice president.

“I got a call early this morning that they had found a body on the perimeter of the property," Miller told KTLA. "We’re cooperating with the police in every way possible. They asked for camera footage over a period of time.”

Detectives told KTLA the girl's body was found face down and concealed in bushes.

Coroner's officials have ruled her death a homicide, but the cause was being withheld due to the ongoing investigation, the Sheriff's Department said.

It is also unclear exactly how long the body was at the location before being discovered.

“They believe it happened sometime Saturday evening," Miller said.

Detectives are now trying to identify a suspect or suspects and determine a motive.

In an email to KTLA, the victim's cousin said Bustos never returned home after hanging out with friends Friday afternoon, "which is not normal behavior." She didn't answer her cellphone, which was shut off after midnight, according to the cousin.

The family has set up a GoFundMe campaign to help raise money for Bustos' funeral costs.

No additional details have been released amid the ongoing investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff's Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500. Anonymous tips can be submitted through Crime Stoppers by dialing 800-222-8477, or visiting the website http://lacrimestoppers.org.
