Undercover operation leads to 24 arrests in child sex crimes

Photos of the 24 men arrested as part of undercover operation led by the Mesa Police Department to find child sex criminals.

Local law-enforcement agencies made 24 arrests during a six-day period as part of an undercover operation targeting child sex crimes.

Mesa Police Department joined with Tempe, Gilbert and Chandler police departments as well as the Attorney General’s Office to conduct the operation, Mesa police officials announced Tuesday in a news release.

"Officers and undercover detectives placed ads on websites commonly sought out by suspects seeking illegal sex acts," the release said.

Officials say the suspects, who ranged from 21 to 80 years old, were arrested after being suspected of soliciting and/or brokering deals for various sex acts.

A list of the suspects' names and charges can be viewed here.

"Crimes involving children are of the highest priority and I appreciate our partnership with all the agencies involved in the successful removal of these dangerous child predators from our community," said Ramon Batista, chief of police for the Mesa Police Department, in the news release.

Mesa Police Department said it conducts similar operations every year to reduce the demand for child and human sex trafficking in the area.

Officials urge anyone with information about someone being trafficked to contact their local police department or the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 888-373-7888 or humantraffickinghotline.org.

Mesa police are still searching for three children who disappeared from group homes on Sunday, including two brothers and an unrelated girl who suffers from several mental issues.
The boys, 14-year-old Miguel Miranda and his 10-year-old brother, Jairo Perez, ran away from a group home in the 7500 block of East Drummer Avenue, said Detective Steve Berry, a Mesa police spokesman.
State Child Protective Services took the boys to the group home at 11 p.m. on Saturday after their mother was arrested in Chandler, he said.
The brothers spent one night at the home and had breakfast the next morning. They went outside to play basketball and never returned.
A police missing persons bulletin said the boys were last seen near McQueen Road and Chandler Boulevard on Sunday.
“They’re not out on the streets. I definitely don’t think that,’’ Berry said. “It’s a matter of tracking down the right family and friends to find them.’’
The boys were taken to the group home after Chandler police arrested their mother, Jessica Montano, 36, on suspicion of trespassing and contributing to the delinquency of minors. Police found Montano and the boys on Saturday night inside an abandonned house in the 300 block of West Boston Street.
Miguel is described as 5 feet 4 inches tall, weighing 140 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. Jairo is described as 4 feet 8 inches tall, weighing 110 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.
In the second case, Sonia Leann Rojas, 16, disappeared Sunday from another group home on the eastern fringe of Mesa, near Meridian and Adobe roads.
Sonia is described as having several mental issues. Although she took her medicine that morning, she left without it and also had no money or cell phone with her, according to a police bulletin.
Police believe Sonia may have taken public transportation to Phoenix. She is 4 feet 11 inches tall, weighing 150 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.
Anyone with information about the missing children is asked to call the Missing Persons Unit at 480-644-4075 or 480-644-2211.
