International Child Abduction Thwarted at JFK Airport
On June 20, 2012, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) was contacted by a concerned father who believed his ex-wife was attempting to leave the country with the couple’s twelve and fourteen-year-old children. The couple shared residence and custody of the children with a court order prohibiting the removal of the children from New York State or their relocation without the prior consent of either parent.

During a phone conversation with his 17-year old child, the father discovered that his ex-wife planned to take the two younger children with her to a resort within New York and would be out of town for the next couple of weeks. The father became suspicious since this was not the first time the mother had abducted the children and taken them outside the United States.

His suspicions led him to search the family’s computer, where he found airline information for an outbound flight that evening from New York’s JFK Airport to Amman, Jordan.

With only a couple of hours before the international flight, NCMEC Case Manager immediately began coordinating resources and contacted FBI’s field office in New York City.

The FBI mobilized resources and agents to JFK Airport. Within minutes before the flight was scheduled to depart and within two hours of receiving the case, FBI agents and airport police located the children, who had already checked-in, and safely escorted them and their mother off the airplane. The children’s father was reunited with his children that evening.
